What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupunctureCosmetic acupuncture, also known as facial rejuvenation acupuncture, has been practised in China for thousands of years, not only to promote youthfulness but as a remedy for many ailments and to promote general wellbeing. It involves placing very tiny needles into special points around the face and body to alleviate common signs of ageing. When needles are inserted, muscles are relaxed and circulations are improved and this is understood to stimulate collagen production, feed and oxygenate the skin and firm the underlying muscle. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is often referred to as an acupuncture 'facelift', however, it is more than a cosmetic procedure, it is in fact a rejuvenation and revitalisation process designed to help the whole body look and feel younger.

What to expect from the treatment?

Because acupuncture works with the body's natural energy, you will feel generally revitalised with an overall improvement in wellbeing. The treatment will not give the dramatic effect of a surgical face lift but is suitable for those who want to regain a more natural youthfulness without the use of chemicals. Many people initially notice that the skin has a more even tone and fine lines fade, but as treatment progresses there can be a significant reduction in deep wrinkles, a regained firmness and lifting of the jowls. Facial acupuncture is an excellent alternative to Botox and Cosmetic surgery. It is a safe, virtually painless procedure, has no side effects or risk of discomfort. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is a subtle rejuvenation that can take years off one's face safely and naturally whilst improving overall health.

Main benefits include:

Reduction in fine lines and deep winkles

Improved colour and texture of skin

Enhanced collagen production

Firming of the jaw line

Reduction in puffiness and circles around the eye

Improvement in acne

Better muscle tone of cheeks and jowls.

How many treatments are needed?

A full course of treatment normally includes 10 sessions. Improvements may be seen after just one treatment, but each person responds differently depending on their condition. The number of treatments you require will depend ultimately on the initial condition of the skin and the results you wish to achieve. Some people opt for two or three sessions before a big event whilst others have a full course of 10-12 weekly treatments to optimise the results. The effects normally become more noticeable and lasting on or about the 6th to 7th session. Following the initial course of treatment, maintenance sessions are recommended to prolong the results.

What does treatment involve?

During initial consultation, a detailed medical history and facial assessment takes place and a specific treatment plan is developed to meet your specific needs. Fine needles are inserted into points on the face and rest of the body. The facial needles are so tiny that they will cause minimal discomfort. Most people do not experience any discomfort at all and find the whole process very relaxing. Treatment lasts around 75 minutes with general face cleansing to start and then the needles being left in place while you relax to soothing music. Once the needles are removed treatment is followed by a special facial massage. Facial mask will be applied after the massage and the treatment is finished with toning and moisturising.

There are not usually any side effects to treatment although some people may rarely experience a small bruise. It is common to feel very relaxed following treatment and it is recommended that you take a short while to recover before driving or returning to work.

Because acupuncture works by stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, once optimal results are achieved most people benefit from top-up treatments on an occasional basis.
